Nearly four years ago, Sokvin Vann found herself stuck in a routine, feeling uninspired. Encouraged by her brother, she channeled her passion for K-pop and BTS into creating BTS Army Toronto, a local fan club dedicated to organizing events and fostering connections among fans of the South Korean band. Despite facing personal tragedy with her brother’s passing shortly after starting the club, Vann persevered and expanded the community, which now boasts hundreds of members and a team of about 10 people.
The upcoming return of BTS to Toronto after more than a decade has the fan club buzzing with excitement. Vann, along with her son Jordan and the dedicated team, is preparing for the highly anticipated shows at Rogers Stadium as part of BTS’s Arirang World Tour. The city of Toronto has even joined in the celebration by renaming a section of Yonge Street to BTS Boulevard and declaring the weekend as BTS Weekend, marked by special lighting and festivities.
Known for their deep connection with fans through meaningful lyrics and artistic expressions, BTS has garnered a devoted following worldwide. The group’s impact goes beyond music, touching on themes of mental health, self-love, and personal growth. Vann, also a real estate agent, has leveraged her involvement with BTS Army Toronto to create a business venture supporting K-pop artists called Idol Konnect.
As the only Canadian stop on their world tour, BTS’s presence in Toronto holds special significance for fans like Vann and Aira Uy, who see it as a long-awaited opportunity. The anticipation for the concerts is palpable, with fans flocking to official merchandise pop-up stores and eagerly awaiting the live performances at Rogers Stadium. The immersive concert experience, featuring a 360-degree stage setup, promises to be a memorable event for both fans and the band.
In the midst of the excitement, BTS Army Toronto is gearing up to engage fans through various activities during the Toronto Korean Festival and near the concert venue. Vann is particularly curious about the intimate atmosphere of the shows and the surprise song choices that BTS has in store for their Toronto performances. Despite the inevitable post-concert blues, Vann emphasizes the lasting impact and sense of gratitude that the concert experience brings to fans and their shared connection with the band.
